Recently I went on a little shopping spree buying up multi-disc DVD collections of old horror shows for a trip down memory lane. Among them I've picked up both collections of "The Twilight Zone". You may or may not be aware of it, but there was an 80's series of the "The Twilight Zone". It featured a lot of the A-List actors and actresses from the time, and featured fairly solid short stories akin to what viewers of the original series had become accustom to. The 80's series also harbored colored episodes instead of the usual B&W ones.
Supposing you are interested you can find this collection on Amazon for a little over $30, right now. It is in DVD format with seasons divided up into multiple collections of discs numbering from 1, upwards. Each DVD in the collection contains the episodes in full in a 4:3 aspect ratio, and with dated visuals. The transfer from television to DVD did not translate too well in this case.
You'll see a lot of grainy and out of focus scenes that looked fairly much as they would on an old tube TV back in the day. Outside of that glaring flaw there are also bonus features contained within the extras menus for added incentive. Something extra for series enthusiasts.
For the price, and the amount of content you get it is still fairly much on point with current marketplace values. My only complaint, if any, is the fact that the presentation on a widescreen 4K HDTV is set to a default 4:3 aspect ratio instead of full screen/widescreen.
Other than that the trip back to the 80's was an enjoyable one. Seeing younger versions of now older A-Listers was like revisiting my childhood days. They included shorts with the likes of Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, and Adrienne Barbeau (A relative from my father's side). Not only were there A-List stars portraying key characters, but a lot of the script was written by well known directors like John Carpenter. It is rare to see so many celebrity cameos, and influences in a TV series, but if they were big at the time they were there.
In Closing ...
My only hopes in getting this review out to the public is to inspire someone to do a 4K remaster of it, and all the other horror themed TV shows of that era. Night Gallery, Tales from the Darkside, One Step Beyond, and even Tales From the Crypt are long overdue a proper revival.
There's never been anything quite like them since their debut, and I highly doubt there will ever be again. It is a once in a lifetime entertainment experience that needs to be preserved, and updated graphically as technology advances. If you agree with this then PLEASE share this review far and wide.
Thank you once again for stopping by, and reading my critique on some of horror's finest feature presentations! I hope you stick around as I do plan to review more frequently.
